A circular saw straight edge guide is one of the most useful jigs you can build if you work with plywood, larger boards, or long straight cuts.
I already have a few circular saw guides in my workshop, and each one has a different use. A simple circular saw guide rail is great for shorter cuts, and a crosscut jig is useful for quick 90-degree cuts. But for longer straight cuts, larger panels, and more track-saw-like control, this guide is the one I reach for.
This DIY version works a bit differently from a basic straight edge. The circular saw sits in a wooden shoe, and the shoe rides along the guide track. This helps keep the saw straight during the whole cut, especially at the beginning and end where it is easy for the saw to drift.

Before You Start: Circular Saw Straight Edge Guides
Before building the guide, it helps to understand what makes this jig different from a simple circular saw straight edge.
A basic straight edge gives the circular saw something to follow, but the saw is still held by hand against the guide. This version is more controlled because the circular saw sits in a wooden shoe, and the shoe rides along a track-style guide.
That makes the cut more predictable, especially when working with longer boards or plywood sheets.
1. Why Build This Circular Saw Straight Edge Guide?
I built this guide mainly for long straight cuts and larger plywood pieces. A regular circular saw can make straight cuts, but keeping it perfectly on the line freehand is difficult.
With this guide, the saw stays in the shoe and follows the track. This makes it easier to keep the saw straight from the beginning of the cut to the end.
It is also a good option if you want more control from your circular saw, but you are not ready to buy a commercial track saw system.
2. What Is the Difference Between This Guide and a Simple Straight Edge?
A simple straight edge is just a board, level, rail, or guide clamped to the workpiece. You press the circular saw against it and follow the edge.
This jig works differently. The circular saw is fixed inside a wooden shoe, and the shoe slides along a routed slot in the guide track. The aluminum sliding bar keeps the shoe moving in a straight path.
This makes the jig feel more like a shop-made track saw guide than a basic straight edge.
3. Can This Replace a Track Saw?
Not completely. A commercial track saw is usually smoother, more refined, and easier to set up for repeated work.
But this DIY circular saw straight edge guide is a useful alternative if you already have a circular saw and want to make longer, straighter cuts without buying a dedicated track saw.

4. How Do You Make Straight Cuts with a Circular Saw?
The easiest way to make straight cuts with a circular saw is to use a guide. You can use a straight board, a speed square, a circular saw fence, a commercial guide rail, or a DIY track-style guide like this one.
For the best results, mark the cut line clearly, align the guide, clamp the workpiece, and move the saw slowly and steadily through the cut.
5. Is This a Beginner-Friendly Build?
I would call this an intermediate woodworking jig.
The idea is simple, but the build has a few steps that need accuracy: making the wooden shoe, cutting the slot in the track, attaching the aluminum sliding bar, and making sure the shoe slides smoothly.
If you are completely new to woodworking, you may want to start with a simpler circular saw guide rail first. But if you already have some experience with a circular saw, router, and drill, this is a very useful weekend project.
Let’s Start Building
This circular saw straight edge guide is made from two main parts: the long guide track and the wooden shoe for the circular saw.
- The wooden shoe holds the circular saw in position. Once the saw is fixed inside the shoe, the shoe slides along the track and keeps the saw moving straight through the cut.
- Under the shoe, there is an aluminum sliding bar. This bar fits into a routed slot in the guide track and works like a runner. It keeps the shoe aligned and helps the saw follow the same path from the beginning of the cut to the end.
- I also added an aluminum guide rail on top of the track for extra stability. This helps prevent the shoe from tipping and makes the guide feel more controlled while cutting.
- The track itself can be clamped to the workbench using the clamping holes, or it can be used with anti-slip tape on the bottom. I still prefer clamping whenever possible, especially when accuracy matters.
The most important part of this build is fit. The shoe needs to match your circular saw, the sliding bar needs to fit the routed slot, and the saw should move smoothly without too much play.
💡TIP: Measure your circular saw carefully before cutting the shoe. The shoe should hold the saw securely, but the saw still needs to sit flat and square.
NOTE: The sliding bar and track slot should fit closely. A tight fit can be adjusted with sanding, but a loose fit will make the guide less accurate.
How to make a Circular Saw Straight Edge Guide
Step 1: Measure and Cut the Circular Saw Shoe
Start by measuring the base plate of your circular saw. This measurement is important because the wooden shoe needs to fit your specific saw.
My circular saw base is 300 mm × 132 mm. I added around 20 mm to the front, back, and sides, then cut a plywood piece for the shoe.
The shoe is the part that holds the circular saw and later slides along the guide track. It should be large enough to support the saw, but not oversized. A compact shoe is easier to control and keeps the guide more comfortable to use.
I used 9 mm plywood for the shoe. Mark the shape on the plywood, cut it to size, and check that your circular saw sits flat on top.
At this stage, the shoe is just a simple plywood base. In the next step, we’ll add the strips around the saw so it stays fixed in position.
💡TIP: Do not copy the shoe size blindly. Measure your own circular saw base first and adjust the shoe dimensions to fit your saw.
NOTE: Leave enough space around the saw base for the fixing strips, but keep the shoe as compact as possible so it slides smoothly on the track.
Step 2: Attach the Shoe Strips Around the Circular Saw
Now add the strips around the circular saw base. These strips keep the saw fixed in the wooden shoe so it stays in the same position while sliding along the guide track.
Cut the front and back strips first. Place the circular saw on the plywood shoe, position the strips tightly against the saw base, and glue them in place.
Once the glue dries, secure the strips with screws. Then repeat the same process for the side strips.
The goal is to hold the circular saw firmly, but the saw should still be easy to remove from the shoe if needed. Do not make the fit too tight.
For the side strips, I used aluminum L-angles because I had some leftovers in the workshop. You can use wood strips instead. The important thing is that the saw sits square and does not move side to side.
💡TIP: Place the circular saw in the shoe while positioning the strips. This helps you get the fit right and prevents the shoe from being too loose or too tight.
NOTE: The front and back edges of many circular saw bases are slightly raised. Make sure the strips are tall enough to hold the saw base properly.
Step 3: Make the Blade Slot in the Shoe
Now make the blade slot in the wooden shoe. This opening allows the circular saw blade to pass through the shoe while cutting.
Place the circular saw in the shoe and make sure it sits flat and square. Then clamp the shoe securely to the workbench so nothing can move.
The fastest way to make the slot is with a careful plunge cut using the circular saw. Lower the blade slowly and let it cut through the plywood shoe.
Take your time with this step. A plunge cut with a circular saw requires control and experience, so only do it if you feel comfortable with the technique.
If you do not want to make a plunge cut, you can also make the opening with a router or a jigsaw. The goal is simply to create a clean slot for the saw blade.
After cutting the slot, check that the blade moves freely and does not rub against the shoe.
💡TIP: Clamp the shoe securely before cutting the blade slot. The shoe should not shift while making the opening.
NOTE: If a plunge cut with a circular saw does not feel safe, do not do it. Use a router or jigsaw instead to make the blade slot.

Step 4: Make the Aluminum Sliding Bar
Now make the aluminum sliding bar that will later be attached to the bottom of the circular saw shoe.
This bar works like a runner. It slides inside the slot in the guide track and keeps the shoe moving in a straight line.
I used an aluminum flat bar that measures 380 mm × 20 mm × 4 mm. You can also use a wooden runner, but I prefer aluminum because it slides smoothly and is less affected by changes in workshop temperature or humidity.
Mark and drill several holes along the length of the aluminum bar. These holes will be used later to attach the bar to the bottom of the shoe.
Countersink the holes so the screw heads sit below the surface. This is important because the bar needs to slide smoothly in the track slot without anything catching.
After drilling, round the corners and smooth the edges with a file or sandpaper. This helps the bar slide more easily and prevents sharp edges from scraping the slot.
💡TIP: Take a few extra minutes to file and smooth the aluminum edges. A smoother bar will slide better and feel much nicer in use.
NOTE: Make sure the screw heads are fully countersunk. If they stick out even slightly, the shoe may catch or drag inside the track slot.
Step 5: Cut the Slot in the Guide Track
Now cut the long guide track for the circular saw shoe. I used 12 mm Baltic birch plywood for the track, cut to 1200 mm × 230 mm.
Since this guide is made for longer straight cuts, try to keep the track as straight and flat as possible. You can use a straight edge, level, or another guide to cut the plywood to size.
Next, mark the position of the slot for the aluminum sliding bar. In my build, the slot is positioned 50 mm from the edge of the guide track.
Cut the slot using a router and a straight guide. I used my router dado jig for this, but you can also use a straight board, aluminum bar, or any reliable straight edge as a router guide.
The slot width should match the aluminum sliding bar. Since my sliding bar is 20 mm wide and 4 mm thick, the slot needs to be just wide enough for the bar to slide smoothly.
Make the slot a little tighter at first. You can always sand the edges and fine-tune the fit later. A tight, smooth fit is much better than a loose slot.
After routing the slot, sand the edges and test the sliding bar. It should move easily, but without noticeable side-to-side movement.
💡TIP: Sneak up on the final slot width. It is easier to sand a tight slot slightly wider than to fix a slot that is already too loose.
NOTE: The slot depth should be just a little deeper than the thickness of the aluminum sliding bar. The bar needs room to slide, but the shoe should still sit flat and stable on the track.
Step 6: Attach the Sliding Bar to the Shoe
Now attach the aluminum sliding bar to the bottom of the circular saw shoe.
Apply epoxy to the aluminum bar and position it on the underside of the shoe. Make sure it is straight and aligned with the direction of the cut. Once the bar is in position, secure it with screws.
The screws need to be fully countersunk so they do not stick out from the aluminum bar. If the screw heads are proud of the surface, the shoe will not slide smoothly in the track slot.
The distance between the edge of the sliding bar and the blade slot in the shoe should be just a little less than 50 mm. This allows the shoe to run in the track slot while the saw blade trims the edge of the guide.
After the sliding bar is attached, place the circular saw with the shoe onto the guide track. Let the aluminum bar sit inside the routed slot and slowly slide the shoe along the track to test the fit.
Once everything slides smoothly, make the first cut along the guide. This trims off the excess plywood and creates a clean reference edge matched to your circular saw setup.
💡TIP: Test the shoe on the track before making the first cut. It should slide smoothly from start to finish without binding.
NOTE: Keep the sliding bar straight when attaching it to the shoe. If it is angled, the shoe may bind in the slot or pull the saw slightly off line.
Step 7: Add the Side Guide Rail for Stability
Now add the side guide rail to the top of the track. This rail gives the circular saw shoe extra support and helps keep it stable while sliding along the guide.
Place the circular saw shoe on the track with the aluminum sliding bar sitting inside the routed slot. Slide the shoe along the track and check how it moves.
Then mark the outside edge of the shoe in several places along the track. These marks will show you where to position the side guide rail.
I used an aluminum L-angle for this part. Place it along the marked line and attach it temporarily with double-sided tape. Check that the shoe can still slide smoothly without binding.
Once the position looks good, secure the aluminum rail with screws. The rail should help guide the shoe, but it should not squeeze it too tightly.
This extra rail makes the guide feel more controlled and helps prevent the shoe from tipping during the cut.
💡TIP: Test the shoe movement before fixing the side rail permanently. The shoe should slide smoothly from one end of the track to the other.
NOTE: Do not press the side rail too tightly against the shoe. A little clearance is needed so the shoe can move freely without binding.
Step 8: Add Clamping Holes and Anti-Slip Tape
The last step is to add the clamping holes and anti-slip tape. These are small details, but they make the circular saw straight edge guide much easier to use.
First, drill several holes along the guide track. I used a 35 mm Forstner bit for this. The holes give you space for clamps, help hold the guide and workpiece to the bench, and also make the jig easier to hang on the wall for storage.
After drilling the holes, sand the edges smooth. This removes splinters and makes the guide more comfortable to handle.
Next, add anti-slip tape to the bottom of the guide track. The tape helps reduce movement when the guide is placed on a board or plywood sheet.
The anti-slip tape is helpful, but I still recommend clamping the guide whenever possible. Clamps give you better control, especially when making long cuts or when accuracy matters.
Once the clamping holes and anti-slip tape are added, the DIY circular saw straight edge guide is ready to use.
💡TIP: Drill the clamping holes before applying the anti-slip tape. It is easier to sand and clean the holes while the bottom of the guide is still plain plywood.
NOTE: Anti-slip tape helps keep the guide in place, but it does not replace clamps. For the cleanest and safest cuts, clamp the guide whenever the workpiece size allows it.
This is a great weekend project and one of the best DIY circular saw guides you can make for your workshop. It gives your regular circular saw much better control for long straight cuts, and it is one of the circular saw jigs I use most often in my own projects.
How to Use a Circular Saw Straight Edge Guide
Using the circular saw straight edge guide is simple once the shoe and track are set up. The main idea is to align the guide with your cut line, secure everything, and let the saw slide along the track.
- Mark the cut line
Measure and mark the line where you want to make the cut. Use a pencil line that is easy to see. - Position the guide track
Place the guide track on the workpiece and align the cutting edge with your mark. - Clamp the guide and workpiece
Clamp the guide track and the workpiece to the bench so nothing can move during the cut. The anti-slip tape helps, but clamps are still the better option when accuracy matters. - Place the saw shoe on the track
Set the circular saw shoe onto the guide track. Make sure the aluminum sliding bar sits properly in the routed slot and the shoe slides smoothly. - Check the cut path
Make sure nothing is in the way of the blade, both above and below the workpiece. Use a sacrificial board, MDF sheet, or foam board underneath if needed. - Make the cut
Start the circular saw, let it reach full speed, and push the saw forward slowly and steadily along the track. Keep both hands on the saw and let the guide control the direction.
💡TIP: Make a test cut on scrap wood first, especially after building the guide or changing the saw setup.
NOTE: Always support the workpiece properly. If the offcut drops or pinches the blade, the cut can become rough and the saw can be harder to control.
Tips for Better Cuts
A circular saw straight edge guide helps keep the saw on track, but the final cut still depends on your setup. These small details make a big difference when cutting plywood, panels, or longer boards.
1. Use the Right Blade
Choose a blade that matches the material you are cutting. For plywood and cleaner cuts, a blade with more teeth usually gives a smoother finish and helps reduce tear-out. A dull blade will make the saw harder to push and can leave rough or burned edges.
2. Clamp the Guide When Accuracy Matters
The anti-slip tape helps keep the guide in place, but I still recommend clamping the guide whenever possible. For long cuts, even a small movement can affect the result. Clamps make the setup more stable and give you better control.
3. Support the Workpiece
Support the material on both sides of the cut. This helps prevent the offcut from dropping, pinching the blade, or breaking away at the end of the cut. A rigid foam board, MDF sheet, or scrap support pieces work well under the workpiece. They also help protect your workbench.
4. Let the Saw Do the Work
Start the saw, let it reach full speed, and push it forward slowly and steadily. Do not force the saw through the cut. If you push too fast, the cut can get rough and the blade may drift or bind.
5. Check the Shoe Movement First
Before making the cut, slide the circular saw shoe along the track from start to finish. It should move smoothly without catching, binding, or feeling loose. If the shoe does not slide well, adjust the slot, sliding bar, or side rail before cutting your final workpiece.
💡TIP: Make a test cut after any adjustment to the shoe, sliding bar, or guide rail. A small change in the setup can affect how the guide cuts.
NOTE: Keep both hands on the saw and stay aware of the blade path. This guide improves control, but all normal circular saw safety rules still apply.
My Take
This circular saw straight edge guide is one of the best DIY circular saw guides you can make if you want better control on long straight cuts.
I have built a few different circular saw guides for my workshop, and each one has its place. A simple circular saw guide rail is great for short straight cuts. A circular saw crosscut jig is useful for 90-degree cuts. But when I need to cut larger plywood sheets or make longer straight cuts, this track-style guide is the one that makes the most sense.
What I like about this jig is that the saw does not just ride along a loose straight edge. It sits in a wooden shoe, and the shoe slides along the track. That makes the cut feel more controlled from the beginning to the end.
It is not as refined as a commercial track saw, but it can still serve really well in a small workshop. If you already have a circular saw, this guide is a practical way to get more accurate long cuts without buying a full track saw system.
This is not the simplest circular saw jig to build, but it is worth it. The most important parts are the fit of the wooden shoe, the sliding bar, and the routed track slot. Once those work smoothly together, the guide becomes very practical.
