NOTE: The 2470T and the 2470FT models already come with an SDS-plus chuck and a drill chuck. These quick change chucks can be easily interchanged as needed depending on the material and the task performed. 

Makita HR2470 Pros & Cons

Based on my experience working with the Makita HR 2470, I’d like to share some of the pros and cons I have found:

What I like about this tool

  1. Quick and Easy Bit Changes: The SDS Plus mechanism allows for convenient and rapid bit replacements. You take the bit out, replace it with another one and you are ready to go.
  2. Multi-purpose and Powerful: The 780w motor is powerful enough to drill through tough materials like concrete and masonry, making it ideal for industrial purposes. However, it also offers versatility by functioning as a regular drill for softer materials like wood or plastic. That provides great flexibility for various applications.
  3. Use of Variable Drill Bits: If used together with an adapter or a drill chuck you can easily switch between SDS-plus drill bits and straight drill bits. That way you’re not just limited to one type of drill bit shank.
  4. Torque Limiter: The torque limiter serves as a protective feature that disconnects the motor from the output shaft when a certain torque level is reached. This prevents gear damage by automatically disengaging gears if the bit binds.
  5. Comfortable Handling: the tool has an ergonomic design, including a well-balanced weight distribution and comfortable grip. It is designed to minimize vibrations, providing a more comfortable working experience even during extended periods of use.
  6. Durability: the tool is built from quality materials and does withstand demanding job site conditions.
  7. Price: without a doubt, the Makita HR 2470 offers excellent value for its price.

What could be better

  1. Changing the angle of the side handle: rotating the handle is not simple. You need to remove the chuck first, and then adjust and set the handle in position. 
  2. Side handle material: the handle is made from plastic, which may be less durable and prone to breakage under heavy loads.
  3. Changing of chucks: the rotation of the ring requires strength and it might be difficult at first to easily switch between chucks. 

Working With Makita HR2470

Working with the Makita 2470 has been a solid experience, especially when it comes to the SDS drilling capability. Comparing it to other hammer drills in its weight class, there’s no match for the precision and efficiency it offers. It handles concrete, masonry, and even wood with ease, making it versatile for various home renovation projects. However, it’s worth noting that for heavy industrial tasks, it may not be as effective as a dedicated jackhammer.

One pleasant surprise is the relatively quiet operation of the rotary hammer. It’s not as heavy as an industrial-grade hammer drill, allowing for longer use with less fatigue. I’ve found it to be equally suitable for home renovations and more delicate projects in the workshop, such as drilling precise holes in wood. It performs exceptionally well in both scenarios.

The tool is comfortable to hold and doesn’t feel excessively heavy. The trigger action allows for a gradual start, allowing me to locate the starting point of the hole precisely. Nevertheless, after continuous use for about 20 minutes, the drill tends to get hot, so it’s better to let it cool down before further use.

However, there are a couple of aspects that I’m not entirely satisfied with. The adjustable handle can be quite challenging to adjust, and changing the chucks requires some strength and technique, which may take some time to get used to. If you want to rotate and adjust the handle you need to take off the chuck entirely first, and then adjust the teeth on the handle so they fit in between the protrusions on the tool barrel. 

Being a Makita brand, it boasts high-quality construction and durability, although it may come with a higher price tag compared to other alternatives in the market. Based on my experience, I would still choose this hammer drill again for its reliability. It truly excels as a rotary hammer drill, specifically designed for drilling through concrete. As a homeowner, the power it delivers is more than sufficient for almost any task. It’s a case of getting what you pay for, as it offers long-lasting performance without the risk of burning up or breaking.

All in all, the Makita hr2470 is a great addition to any workshop, providing the necessary power and versatility for a wide range of projects.

NOTE: Before using the drill, it’s recommended to apply a small amount of bit grease to the shank head of the drill bit. This lubrication ensures smooth operation and extends the lifespan of the chuck.
